Urdu Blues
My love for Ghazals started with Hariharan and his rendering of "Ehde Masti HaiN, Log KehteiN HaiN"
Since then, I have played with Jagjit Singh, graduated to Ghulam Ali, dabbled a bit in Mehdi Hasan, but I have never stopped enjoying Hariharan. I love the way his mellifluous voice can spread sateen over the ambience, and his Urdu diction is perfect ! The thing I love most about him is, however, his sense of experimentation.
Last year, we went to one of his concerts in
Check out the intricate juxtaposition of the piano notes with the slightly more predominant tabla beats in this one ..
(Jab Bhi Milte Ho, Muskuraate Ho; Itni KhushiyaaN KahaN Se LaateiN Ho .. )
Or the more overt Jazz notes in this one ..
( Galat HaiN, Muskuraana Chahte HaiN; Woh Apna Gham Chupaana Chahta HaiN)
And if you enjoyed that, you should check out the track "Mujhko Chooke Pighal RaheeN Ho Tum; Mere Humraah, Jal RaheiN Ho Tum" which exemplifies Urdu Blues ..

Respecting the Flag
The next time you decide to prop your legs up on the table, think twice !
This is the picture that got Sania in trouble for showing “disrespect” to the national flag !! I am surprised by the obsession with “disrespecting the flag” in India, where almost nobody takes the effort to proudly display the national flag in spite of a new law that allows private citizens to display the flag. However, there are enough people on the lookout for media attention, filing cases for dishonoring the flag. It is Sania now; it was Tendulkar a couple of months ago (for cutting a cake with the Tricolor) and Mandira Bedi before that ..
That’s what you get when you have lawyers with no work and a media that laps up anything as news …
A Melodious Start to 2008
I have been a Ghazal aficionado for almost two decades, but somehow the passion had taken a backstage in the past couple of years. As we were cleaning out the car a couple of weeks earlier, I came across a CD I had compiled with my favorite Ghazals of Ghulam Ali and that is what probably sparked the desire again (or perhaps it was the Idea Star Singer Ghazal round ..Or the fact that I missed a 19 year school reunion – you see Ghazals go well with nostalgia !! )
Anyway, here is the list from the Ghulam Ali CD that I found...
- KAbhee KitabooN MeiN Phool Rakhna, Kabhi DarakhtoN Pe Naam Likhna; HameiN Bhi Hain Yaad Aaaj Tak Woh Nazar Se HarfeiN Salaam Likhna
- Nain HaiN, Yaake Jaam Saaqui Ke; Ho Gaye Hum Gulaam Saaqui Ke
- NIgahooN Se HameiN Samjha RaheiN HaiN; Nawaazish HaiN Karam Farmaa RaheiN HaiN
- Koi Raat Aisi Bhi Aaye, Ke Yeh Manzar DekhooN; Teri Peshaani Ho Aur Apna Muqaddar DekhooN
- Lutf Joh Uske Intezaar MeiN HaiN, Woh KahaN Mausam-e-Bahaar MeiN HaiN
- Aaj Tuje KyoN Chupp Si Lagi Hain; Kuchh to Bataa Kyaa Baat Hui HaiN
- Chamakte Chaand Ko Toota Hua Taara Banaa Daala; Meri Awaargee Ne Mujhe Awaara Banaa Daala
- Gali Gali Teri Yaad Bichee HaiN, Pyaar Rasta Dekh Ke Chal; Mujhse Itni Wehshat HaiN To Meri HadooN Se Door Nikal
- Mein Khayaal HOon Kisi Aur Ka, Mujhe Sochta Koi Aur Hain
- Woh De Raha HaiN, Dilaase To Umr Bhar Ke Mujhe; Bicchad Na Jaayen KahiN Phir Udaas Karke Mujhe
- Chupke Chupke Raat Din, AasooN Bahaana Yaad HaiN
- Kal ChaudviN ki Raat Thee, Chath Par Raha Charcha Tera
- Dil Se Mere Woh Sitamgar NIkla, Aaina Tod Ke Pathar Nikla
- Dhalte JaayeN, Shaam Ke Saayen, Lekin Saajan Tum NahiN Aaye
and here is something for you to enjoy ...

An email Message to my Old Friends at the GREMS Batch of 89 Reunion

School Reunion
My old school classmates are meeting back in Baroda tomorrow for a reunion - 19 years after leaving high school in 1989. I have studied in the same school with these friends for 14 years, right from the Kindergarten years to graduating from the 12th grade - so even in literal terms, many are my "langotia yaars" I guess. For many years, only around 7 or 8 or us were in regular touch with each other and so to imagine that we are going to have an attendance of around 30-35 of our old classmates tomorrow is an amazing accomplishment.
Talking to old friends and just thinking about old school days have brought to the forefront so many memories - i have been reveling in nostalgia for a couple of weeks now. Yesterday as were watching "Tare Zameen Par" I recalled our art teacher - a Mr. Hajranis - who used to throw chalk pieces to hit us just like the art teacher (not Amir Khan - the one he replaced) !! I recalled my friend Rajesh telling me that he wanted to grow up an find a cure for Cancer (or was it Heart Attack?) as we walked to school one morning (BTW, Considering that he is the COO of Gujarat Life Sciences, I guess he has alteast not strayed too far away from where he wanted to go !! ) As I write this listening to a Hariharan ghazal, I cannot but recall that it was my friend Ganapathy (Gania) who introduced me to Hariharan's Ghazals, 20 years ago. I could go on and on since I am on a roll, but I am going to save it for another post ..
I will be in NJ this weekend physically but my mind will wander with my friends as they go to school tomorrow morning to attend the morning assembly...
Yes, time fies, but nostalgia prevails ....

An India State Of Mind
What better day to finally break my writers block and post again than the 60th anniversary of our independence day !
Being away from the country for almost 10 years, I guess this would be a good time as any to wonder what being abroad has meant to the Indian in me. Many millions of Indian have over the years decided that their “tryst with destiny” was on foreign shores. Does being away from
I recall the closing lines from one of my all time favorite movies – A Few Good Men: “You don’t need a patch on your arm to have honor”. Yes, that is right; you don’t need an Indian passport or live in

Kerala - some pictures
This is the Sri Rama temple in Karimpuzha
Our trip to Kerala was a whirlwind 40 hours trip to meet my grandma - and amazingly enough we found time to visit relatives and also pray at Kadampuzha and Guruvayoor !
Of course, that means no time for photography - although I used my new Casio Exilim in the Video mode (amazing clarity of video in HQ resolution - 1Gb = 17 minutes of video) to capture motion clips wherever possible
A few more pics behind the LJ cut including one from my grandma's kitchen

The Fall and Fall of The Times Of India

I just could not believe my eyes when I saw the newspaper that morning. I had been cribbing about the steady deterioration in the quality of articles in the Times of India for a long time, but this had to take the cake. I think (or at least I hope so) that the newspaper just hit rock bottom that day. I just cannot fathom what must have gone through the editor’s mind when he approved this edition of the newspaper. Maybe it was the journalists at Times Of India that were taking a vacation !!
Oh! BTW, forgot to mention that if this story does not interest you, the Times Of India gives you more variety - look carefully at the headline above the "Bored Housewives: H4 Saga" - The other story is much more interesting - " Avril Lavigne is sorry for spitting on and abusing the papparazi".....
Wondering how many people in India actually know who Avril Lavigne is ?? I for one, did not (that is until I googled her now :) )
